Getting “better” at improv can be an elusive goal.

I have noticed that as improvisers become more skillful, they often become less present and less vulnerable. For example, they may reflexively name characters in the scene but not be present when they do it. Counterintuitively, becoming more skilled as an improviser can make us less engaging as a performer. As we develop comfort in certain areas, we spend less time doing the things that are challenging. Perhaps you're really good at naming the elements of the scene, but shy away from interacting with space objects. Ideally, our improv will be a combination of doing the things we do well (and being present in them) and embracing our vulnerability by attempting the things we are not adept at.

In this intensive, we’ll identify the improv skills you are comfortable doing and what you are not. In both areas, I want to lean into the opportunities: Can we be more present in our strengths, joyfully exploring new ways of doing what we already do well? And can we boldly step into our challenges, embracing the power of our vulnerability?
